interview with a photographer: Anke Müller

Ready for another interview?
Here we enter into the professional with a person who makes and has made spectacular photos. Anke is a specialist in the section of working dogs.
His masterpieces are born in Germany and around the world are gaining fame and respect
A very interesting interview where She explains how She sees the photography and her way of photographing
good reading :D

First of all some warm up questions
The first thing you do after getting up in the morning?
Drink coffee and listen to the news...
I thing that you hate?
Lies
A word that you use most frequently?
Hi
Ok , I think is enough , let's be more serious begin with the interview

Could you tell our readers a little about yourself (who are you, where are you from...)
I was born in Solingen / Germany and the talent inherited by my dad I started painting in the 80-s and went to many exhibitions. All the representation of details has been very fascinating to me and this hasn´t changed until today.

Of course the development of the digital photography made many things easier.
In the year 2003 my husband and I let us teach in product photography by an
assistant professor of a technical high school. We wanted to use this professionally
for our catalogue, because everyone knows about the costs of professional
photography in a studio :)
We were demanded extremely, because our articles are made of stainless steel
and as difficult such as glass if you want to take a picture.

Are you also involved in dog sports activity?
No, I´m not.

When did you start getting interested in photography?
In my youth - I get started with dad´s Leica and spent a lot of money
for to develop my pictures.

Tell me a little bit about your start in dog sports photography.
Always „armed“ with a camera in 2005 I started taking photos of my husband and
his friends during training sessions. More than satisfied with the results I have
seen a big potential and immediately I have created a homepage around the
dog handlers, competitions with results ect. Trials and championships followed
and meanwhile many Associations use my pictures for magazines, logos, websites
and online-albums, like my customers do.

Flyers, advertising in event-program and banners followed and already the next
event the people could see my logo on my clothes. Brilliant advertising-ideas by my
husband, to whom I want to say many thanks. I owe him a lot and he supports me
whenever he can – excepting he is one of the competitors with our Malinois
„ Nierlenders Bart „ This has priority for me!

What kind of equipment do you use?
Nikon 3D and Nikon D700 – and various objectives. I changed from Canon to
Nikon ( less weight ) only because of the weight. I had an intervertebral disc occurrence incl. operation.

Which one item of equipment would you say is the most important to you?
Photoshop on my computer :)

In general, during a session, how many pics would you say you take to find "the right one"?
First of all lies this in the eye of the viewer. In my opinion the best pics
are, when they are in action – real action like flying into the sleeve,
barking in front of the helper or when you can see the movement of muscles and
hair during a race ( greyhound, afghan hound or husky with a slide ).
It depends on the right moment to push the button, because some things do
happen in a millisecond.
That´s what I do to make my work not boring – I do visit different events with
various races.

Who are your influences (past and /or present)?
The animal itself – and as a former painter I pay attention to details.
When I have got a pic of something I mostly do have an idea which extraction
could be interesting.

How do you describe your photographic style ?
What I prefer regarding my style is the position in height of the dogs eye. Not very
comfortable, but it is worth.

When you take pics on a championship nearly all of them will be the same. This
doesn´t matter to me, because every dog handler is interested in „his“ photos and
they want to see them all. Most of them want to remember this competition which
maybe is the first one, the last one or the only one.
Tracking is not very exciting, but the dog is calm and you can take good pics
without to hurry. Obedience is interesting and shows the full concentration of the
dog, whereby protection work is the supreme discipline. Here you have to be 100 %
attentive and you will get no second chance. Means you must know your equipment
exactly and also the settings you need for the following pics. You have to attend
sun, light, shadow, changing colors on the other side of the stadium because of
the exposure. And you should watch the judge! They do prefer a special position
to score the dog, so it´s better you do have a position, that you never do have
the judge in front of your lens when the dog is in action.

Before you put your work "out there". Do you have it critiqued by someone else, or do you just go with what your heart tells you is right?
My hardest censor is my husband – but he do very seldom and only for composings.

The most beautiful photographic memories of 2010/2011?
When something extraordinary happens and the people asks you:
„ Do you have it ? „

Any plans for the future?
To carry on...

What do you think about the 3D photography?
Too sophisticated and equipment costs to much. You need time to
take the pictures and in dogsport you do not have time

What is it you like the most about being a photographer?
To "freeze" special moments for the infinity

Thank you so much for taking the time to do this interview! Do you have anything else you would like to add?
Maybe you put more information about IPO on your site...
